So...the time is near and these guys have been working hard to get ready
for next week's show. Not just by painting and drawing and writing and
sewing but they're also planning some VERY exciting and one-of-a-kind
hors-dourves. I can't wait. There's work to do in laying out the gallery
and printing to take care of but other than that...things are lookin'
good and everybody seems to be having a good time...
Overall, it's been a great
week here. Last Thursday was the Boys and Girls' Club's "Strike
up the Band" fundraiser at the Showroom with Shane Pruitt and Friends
on stage playing blues and beach music. The BGC provided shagging lessons
and chicken wings. Dance cards were full and a good time was had by
all. Friday night was some intense afrobeat music by Afromotive - it
was a drum playing/horn blowing/dancing extravaganza. After the show,
the band escorted the artists to the NuWay on their tour bus to polish
off the night. Things simmered down a little on Saturday night when
Hub-Bub hosted Spartanburg's second Talk20. There was a big crowd as
expected and some great presentations. Arielle did a presentation on
a cross-country road trip that she did a year ago (see her blog for
details).
So...that's about it. I'm really
enjoying getting to know these guys and I've made some minor observations
over the past couple weeks:
- Arielle is sassy.
That's the best word I can come up. She is honest and totally full of
energy. When Arielle is in her apartment she runs (I mean runs) from
one room to the next. We don't know if it's for exercise, to start or
complete a task, or just to make sure we're all awake down here.
- Derya is a film
fanatic and could possibly be a comedian of some sort if she so chose.
Not only does she love Baliwood films (I'm learning a lot about films
from this job) but she also wants to get a slew of cats and name them
all after cheeses. A great idea I think.
- Nicholas has expressed
a fascination with the South. He already picked up a jar of moonshine
and now wants to meet a real live banjo player and attend a debutante
ball. Any debutante's out there need a date? He can shag.
- Rachel is poised
and reflective. She's our resident poet and our in-house-curry-chef
extraordinaire. She has an affinity for public radio and Atari. If there's
anyone out there who likes exploring abandoned buildings - Rachel's
your girl.
All for now. C ya next week.
