Community Yoga Part I with Corinne Manning - 8/17/10 - Tuesday |
6:00 pm - 7:15 pm |
“Yoga unites all polarities, reconciles opposites, and resolves contrary complements.” John Friend
The goal of The Yoga Project is to bring together community based organizations with members of the community, provide a unique way of donating and fundraising to nonprofits in the Spartanburg County area, and find a deeper way of accessing and realizing artistic projects. Yoga often deals with the balance of strength and easy, muscular energy and organic energy. This translates to many other aspects of our life, but particular to the creative process. Action within art is necessary but in order for work to transcend the basic level of every day life it is important to also remain receptive to achieve work that reaches beyond cliché into that realm the artist didn’t necessarily expect it to go.
Part I: Community Yoga July 20th- August 31st 6 - 7:15 Suggested Donation: $5
Community organizing and art require a balance between dedication and action. The practice of Yoga unites disparate parts back to the whole and aids in finding balance. This space will be an hour to unite it all together, the drive to act, to receive, and create community. Each week a different local community based organization (CBO) will be chosen and highlighted at the class. The intention of the class will contain elements of the organization’s mission. What is present in their mission that we can apply to our own work, our own lives?
Yoga level 1. Please wear loose comfortable clothing, bring your own mat and towel. All money collected will be given to the selected CBO.
Part II Conscious Creativity (An art and yoga workshop) Monthly workshop Saturday afternoons 2.5 hours September- May Cost: $12 Suggested Donation
“The science of Yoga tells us that we are all geniuses if we try hard to be… The same power is in everyone.” Swami Vivekananda
Contemplation is a tool that helps us to live our life from the inside and then live it outwardly more effectively. Neuroscientists state that increased blood flow to a given part of the brain is related to heightened activity in that particular area. In this ongoing monthly workshop series the AiRs will collaborate to offer art classes that are meant to aid in approaching creativity from a deeper place. The workshops will begin with a short yoga and meditation practice which will focus on a theme related to the medium we will all be working in (writing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, and installation). The remaining time will be working on a specific art project led by a different AiR each time.
Proceeds will go to a different CBO each month. Yoga Level 1. Please wear loose comfortable clothing, bring your own mat and towel.
