Doug McAbee - Marius Valdes

Bold colors and whimsical imagery are essential elements in this body of work. A specific color has the ability to shift it’s meaning and it’s po-tential interpretation as it is filtered through the personal experiences of the viewer. The carefully chosen images will also vary in how they are in-terpreted based on those experiences. An image that at first sight may be reminiscent of a cartoon or pleasant childhood memory, upon further in-spection may be found to reveal a more sinister message. There is then, a duality, a battle of wills existing in the color and in the image. Each color and each image, while holding signifi-cant personal meaning to me, will almost always take on new meanings and interpretations to the viewer. These new interpretations are equally as valid and true as are my own.My hope is that some hint or clue of an unnamed thought or feeling may be transferred to the viewer through the combined visual power of color and image. This is the beginning of a visual conversation between the sculpture and the viewer. Visit my website at www.dougmcabee.com.
