Its good to be back in the Hub City after a refreshing and inspiring week in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The Alliance of Artist Communities hosted an artist-in-residence leadership conference at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. It was an incredible week and a great opportunity to meet some amazing folks who are involved with residency programs from across the country. There was tremendous interest and enthusiasm about Hub-Bub and the way we do things around here. We left our mark in New Smyrna. I got to work today feeling refreshed and inspired. And its a good thing because we have a lot going on...
It's crunch time! The AiR Exit Show is in less than 2 weeks. Make sure to come out to The Showroom on Tuesday March 25th from 7-9 pm to see the great work that our AiRs have been working on. If you can't be there for the entire opening, then try to be there at 8 so you can catch Rachel's reading. Speaking of Rachel's reading, you might want to a little reading yourself of Still Home; an anthology of poems by Spartanburg poets that was compiled and edited by our very own writer-in-res. Rachel has worked really hard on this anthology all year and it is B-eautiful! Swing by HUB-BUB on March 20th at 4:30 for the Still Home book launch...
I can feel it! There was a major storm in Spartanburg last night...complete with rain and lightning and phone calls from mom offering tornado instructions. It was so dark and ominous when I fell asleep last night and then...BOOM..bright and sunny and cool this morning. The birds were chirping before I got up. The sun was out before I hit the gym. Ahhh...rain, birds, sunshine...springtime! Spring = new beginnings = fresh starts = feeling reborn. That might be why I chose this image from Derya's blog of some of her new work. She's a March fanatic. Or maybe just a February-hater. And this piece reminds me of birth so...there you go.
...I may commit to true vegetarianism. It's been a rough week for me. I've suffered from food poisoning twice in my life. The first time, I was camping in a small tent on an Indian reservation in South Dakota with 20 other people (they all had their own tents). We all got sick at the same time and shared just 2 bathrooms. It was one of the most miserable experiences of my life but pretty hilarious in retrospect. Monday's experience was much more private (thank goodness) and with a full recovery by Wednesday morning...whew. Despite that little hiccup in the week, we haven't skipped a beat around here. HUB-BUB received about 100 applications for the AiR program 2008/09. I looked at all of the applications from visual artists last week and have narrowed the applicant pool down to 26! We've got a committee of folks to help with the rest of the selection process which starts Thursday night. Very, very exciting. Again...stay tuned...
