The HUB-BUB.COM Residency Program is an eleven-month opportunity for motivated pre-professional and emerging artists who create high quality work to live rent-free in order to focus on the creation of their work. The residencies are open to one creative writer and to three artists working in all forms of visual art; however, our facilities will limit certain applicants like welders, potters, and glass artists who require excessive space or special tools. The live/work spaces will be best suited to artists who work in genres which do not require major equipment, such as (but not limited to) painters, bookmakers, paper artists, filmmakers and computer artists. Photographers are welcome to apply; however there is no dark-room facility in the complex. Artists are responsible for all equipment that they do require (ie. Film artists must provide editing equipment, etc.).

All residents will be between the ages of 20 and 30 upon application. The ideal candidates for this program are challenging, progressive artists who are self-directed, motivated, and passionate about creating new art. Applicants are judged solely on their application and the quality of their work, and not on the basis of previous education. This is a nation-wide search, so both artists in Spartanburg and artists from outside the area will be considered.

Due to space accommodations, privacy protection, and vigorous work schedules, pets, roommates, spouses and children are not permitted to live in the apartments.

In exchange for rent-free living, the artists will work part-time for HUB-BUB.com to help in our mission to promote and propel the arts in our city. The writer-in-residence additionally will serve as an apprentice with the award-winning Hub City Writers Project, an independent press and literary arts organization.  Hub City, our sister organization, shares our building with us, runs a reading series, hosts a writers conference and publishes books with a strong sense of place.   The artists will participate in open-to-the-public studio time, community-based art events, and creative charity work. They will also be encouraged to donate a piece of work to HUB-BUB.COM for archival purposes. In addition to their rent, the writer and artists will earn an allotted stipend for work that they will provide in the HUB-BUB.COM gallery and venue located in the same arts complex as their apartments. Duties may include box office work, gallery hangings, event set-up and break-down, film duties, and general upkeep and maintenance work in the multifunctional art space.

The artists will have an opportunity to showcase and sell their work in our gallery space during their stay, with special gala events highlighting both their existing work at the beginning of their residency and their new work at the end of it.

The next residency will begin June 1, 2008 and to end April 30, 2009. Each residence is worth approximately $20,000, as all Artists-in-Residence will have rent and utilities underwritten for the full 11 months plus be paid a stipend for their work with either HUB-BUB.COM or The Hub City Writers Project.
