In exchange, residents spend up to 20 hours a week working for HUB-BUB or The Hub City Writers Project and getting involved in community based art projects. Work for HUB-BUB includes bartending and setting up for live music, films, and other events in The Showroom Gallery , distributing marketing materials for upcoming HUB-BUB events, keeping a regular HUB-BUB blog, hanging art shows, helping with fundraisers and special events, assisting in gallery maintenance, and more.
Residents will also get involved in community based art projects are specific to their interests. Projects may include collaborating with other local non-profits, public art projects of the resident’s design, participating in open-to-the-public studio time, and other creative charity work. Visual artists-in-residence will be encouraged to donate a piece of work to HUB-BUB for archival purposes. The writer-in-residence will complete their community service hours by working as an apprentice for the Hub City Writers Project , an independent press and literary arts organization that is the sister program to HUB-BUB. His/her duties will include editing manuscripts, helping with Hub City’s annual writers conference, interacting with regional writers, and more.
Residents will have an opportunity to showcase and sell their work in our gallery space during their stay, with special gala events highlighting both their existing artwork/writing at the beginning of their residency and their new work at the end of it.
The next residency will begin June 15, 2010 and will end May 15, 2011. Each residency is worth approximately $20,000, as all Artists-in-Residence will have rent and utilities underwritten for the full 11 months plus be paid a stipend for their work with either HUB-BUB or The Hub City Writers Project.
The ideal candidates for this program are challenging, progressive artists who are self-directed, motivated, and passionate about creating new work. They are excited about interacting with the Spartanburg community and working closely with fellow residents, the HUB-BUB staff, and volunteers. The HUB-BUB residency is an opportunity for artists/writers to make a difference through their craft.

Our facilities will limit certain applicants like welders, potters, and glass artists who require excessive space or special tools. The studio apartments will be best suited to artists who work in genres which do not require major equipment and residents are required to provide their own materials and supplies.
Please note that due to space accommodations, privacy protections, and vigorous work schedules; pets, roommates, spouses and children are not permitted to live in the apartments. The board reserves the right to review any exceptions.
Thank you NEA, Andy Warhol Foundation, Nimoy Foundation, Dedalus Foundation, and all of the private donors who make the HUB-BUB AiR Program possible!
